What Is MIG Welding?

MIG welding — Metal Inert Gas, formally called Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) — is the most widely used welding process in commercial and industrial fabrication. A continuous spool of solid wire electrode feeds through a gun at a controlled rate; an electric arc between the wire and the workpiece melts both simultaneously, depositing filler and fusing the base metals. Externally supplied shielding gas flows from the gun to protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination. The process is semi-automatic: the welder controls gun position, travel speed, and work angle, while the machine manages wire feed rate and current.

MIG is the dominant process for most commercial fabrication and repair work across the GTA. It’s faster than TIG, produces cleaner welds than stick on prepared steel, and handles a broad range of materials — mild steel, structural steel, stainless steel, and aluminum with a spool gun. The process trades some portability (it requires a shielding gas supply) for speed and versatility, making it the right choice for the majority of on-site welding calls in commercial and industrial environments.

Canawelding is a division of CanaStruct — a structural framing and building company operating across Ontario. Our MIG welders bring genuine builder-level knowledge to every job: they assess structural loads, recognize connection requirements, and identify issues beyond the visible weld point. Related search terms for this service include: MIG welder Toronto, GMAW welding GTA, wire feed welding service Toronto, mobile MIG welding near me, on-site MIG welding contractor GTA.

Types of MIG Welding Services We Offer

MIG Welding for Every Project Type

Residential MIG Welding

Homeowners and property managers who need professional welding without dismantling or transporting anything. Common residential MIG calls include fence and gate repair, stair and balcony railings, steel brackets, garden metalwork, and outdoor furniture repair.

We come to your property, assess on-site, and provide a written price before any work begins. One visit — no hidden costs, no shop drop-off required.

Commercial & Construction MIG Welding

Developers, general contractors, and site managers who need a certified MIG welding partner that clears every site documentation and insurance requirement without friction. CWB certification, liability insurance, and WSIB clearance are provided in advance.
Common commercial calls include structural steel modification, connection welding on active builds, commercial gate and access systems, and architectural steel fabrication across the GTA.

Industrial & Plant MIG Welding

Plant operators and maintenance managers who need a qualified MIG welder on the floor quickly — with HSE-ready credentials. We respond to industrial facilities across Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, and the full GTA.

Scope includes plant maintenance, equipment frame repairs, conveyor and structural steel connections, and breakdown repairs. Documentation available before site entry on every call.

Aluminum & Stainless MIG Welding

Aluminum MIG welding requires a spool gun and 100% argon shielding gas — standard push-feed setups cause aluminum wire to birdnest. Stainless MIG requires tri-mix gas and grade-matched filler (ER308L for 304, ER316L for 316L).

Every Canawelding truck carries spool gun equipment, ER4043/ER5356 aluminum wire, tri-mix for stainless, and the correct gas for each material. No substitutions, no return trips.

On-Site Field Welding vs. Shop Drop-Off

Why Mobile Welding Wins for Most GTA Jobs

Most welding shops require you to remove the item, load it, drive it in, and wait for a repair slot. That works for small, transportable parts. It doesn’t work for a gate post set in concrete, a railing bolted to a building, a trailer in your yard, or structural steel in an active build. For those jobs, the shop option doesn’t exist — mobile welding is the only option.

Factor in transport costs, disassembly labour, and production downtime, and field welding almost always costs less than the shop alternative for most GTA applications. It’s not a premium upgrade. It’s the efficient, practical choice. Welding in context also means exact fit — no tolerance gaps from transport or re-positioning, no thermal distortion from moving a warm assembly.

When a Shop Is the Right Call

Shop work makes sense when a component requires bench fixturing or machining that can’t be replicated in the field, when the repair needs post-weld heat treatment in a controlled environment, or when the part is small, easily transported, and non-integrated. For precision TIG work on thin-wall stainless or complex custom fabrication requiring fixtures, a shop environment improves the result.

When you call us, we’ll tell you honestly which approach is right for your specific job. If it’s better done in a shop, we’ll say so. If it can be completed on-site — and for most welding repair and installation calls in the GTA, it can — we’ll confirm same-day availability and come to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between on-site welding and shop welding?

On-site (field) welding means the welder travels to your location and completes the work in place — no transport, no disassembly. Shop welding requires you to bring the material to a fixed facility and wait for a slot. On-site is the right choice when the structure is too large or integrated to move, when disassembly would cause significant downtime, or when the job is part of an active construction sequence. For most welding calls across the GTA, field welding is faster, cheaper, and more practical.

Is on-site welding safe and certified?

Yes — completely. Our welders hold CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) certification under CSA W47.1, the national standard for structural welding quality in Canada. We carry full commercial general liability insurance and maintain active WSIB clearance. Safety data sheets, insurance certificates, and CWB documentation are available in advance of any site visit. General contractors, HSE coordinators, and site supervisors can approve us without delay.

What welding processes do you offer on-site?

We perform MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), and Stick (SMAW) welding on-site, selecting the appropriate process for the material, position, and environment. On-site structural steel welding uses FCAW or SMAW for wind tolerance in open sites; TIG is used for aluminum and stainless; MIG handles most mild and structural steel repair work. If you’re not sure which process your job requires, describe the material and application when you contact us and we’ll advise.

How much does on-site welding cost in Toronto?

Cost depends on job complexity, material type, site access conditions, and time required. Most standard service calls — repairs, railing installs, small structural work — range from $150 to $400. Larger commercial and industrial jobs are quoted on-site after assessment. We always provide a complete, itemized quote before any work begins. What we quote is what you pay — no material surcharges, no travel fees added after the fact.

How quickly can you get a welder to my site?

For standard booked jobs, we typically schedule within 1–3 business days across the GTA. For urgent or time-critical needs, call us directly at (647) 641-0550 rather than submitting a form — phone gets you a faster response. We give you an honest estimated arrival time when you call and we hold to it. Response time depends on current schedule and your location, but we don’t give four-hour windows and disappear.

Can you work on active construction sites?

Yes — active construction sites are a core part of our work, not an exception. We coordinate directly with general contractors and site managers, provide required documentation ahead of time, and integrate cleanly into live construction schedules. Our background in structural framing at CanaStruct means we understand construction sequencing — we know when in the build welding occurs, how our work connects to other trades, and how to operate on an active site without disrupting the schedule.

What materials can you weld on-site?

We weld mild steel, structural steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and wrought iron on-site. Material selection drives our process choice — TIG for aluminum and stainless, MIG for structural and mild steel, Stick for outdoor and vertical structural work. If your job involves an unusual alloy or material combination, describe it in your inquiry and we’ll confirm capability before booking.
