What Is Welding Repair?
Welding repair is the process of restoring a cracked, broken, or corroded welded joint to full strength by removing the failed weld down to sound metal and rewelding it, or reinforcing it with new material, instead of replacing the whole part.
It covers structural steel connections, gates, railings, trailer frames, equipment, and almost any steel, stainless, or aluminum assembly where a weld has failed under load, fatigue, impact, or corrosion.
Most welders run a new bead over the crack. CanaWelding finds out why the joint failed first. A weld laid over a crack without fixing the cause fails again, usually in the same spot. Our welders come from CanaStruct's structural framing work, so they assess the load a joint was carrying before deciding how to repair it.
Welding Repair Cost in Toronto & the GTA
Welding repair cost in the GTA typically runs $150 to $400 for a minor residential repair such as a gate, fence, or railing joint, and $350 to $1,200 for structural or equipment repairs. Larger industrial and commercial jobs are quoted per project after a site visit. These are the ranges we actually quote, not teaser prices.
| Repair Type | Typical Cost | What It Usually Involves |
|---|---|---|
| Gate, fence, or railing joint | $150 to $400 | Single-joint crack or broken weld, repaired on-site in one call |
| Trailer crack or single-joint repair | $200 to $500 | Frame crack or broken bracket repaired at your yard or property |
| Trailer frame rail, cross-member, or hitch | $400 to $1,200 | Multi-pass structural repair or section replacement |
| Structural or equipment weld repair | $350 to $1,200 | Load-bearing connections, machinery frames, conveyor and press components |
| Industrial or commercial multi-joint work | Quoted per project | Site visit, scope review, and documentation where required |
Ranges reflect typical CanaWelding repair calls across the GTA. Every job gets a firm written quote after assessment.
What Affects the Cost of a Welding Repair
Material
Stainless and aluminum cost more to repair than mild steel. They need grade-matched filler, different shielding gas, and slower, controlled heat input.
Extent of Damage
A clean single crack costs less than a joint that has to be cut out, rebuilt, or reinforced with new plate.
Access
A weld at ground level is faster than one overhead, in a tight space, or on equipment that has to be braced first.
Structural Requirements
Load-bearing repairs may need preheat, multiple passes, and documentation, which adds time.
Urgency
Booked repairs are scheduled within 1 to 3 business days. Same-day emergency calls depend on availability.
On-Site vs. Shop
On-site repair removes towing, removal, and reinstallation costs, which is why it usually costs less overall.
- Travel within the GTA included in the quote
- Labour, consumables, and joint prep itemized
- Written quote before any grinding starts
- Repair documentation for regulated work on request
What we quote is what you pay. No additions after the job.
Welding Repair vs. Replacement
For most gates, railings, trailers, and equipment, a repair costs a fraction of replacement and takes a fraction of the time, because the part and everything attached to it stays in place.
| Item | Replace | Repair On-Site |
|---|---|---|
| Steel gate | $2,000 to $4,000 for a new unit, plus removal | Often $200 to $500 |
| Railing | About 2 days to remove, fabricate, and reinstall | About 30 minutes on-site |
| Trailer frame | A new trailer, often thousands of dollars | A few hundred dollars, back in service same day |
A properly executed weld repair is as strong as the original joint, and often stronger, because the full crack is removed and the joint is prepared correctly, a step some original fabrications skip. If a part genuinely cannot be saved, we tell you before we start, not after we have billed for the attempt.
Welding Repair for Homes, Fleets, and Industrial Sites
Our welding repair services cover four main categories. Every one is done on-site at your property, yard, facility, or job site, with no towing or shop drop-off.

Structural Steel Weld Repair
Cracked or failed welds on beams, columns, base plates, and load-bearing connections, restored to their original capacity and repaired to Ontario Building Code requirements.
- Beam and column connections
- Base plates and lintels
- Mezzanine and stair framing

Equipment & Machinery Weld Repair
Production equipment, conveyor frames, press components, and material handling gear crack under cyclic load. Repairing them where they sit keeps downtime short.
- Conveyor and machinery frames
- Excavator, loader, and attachment welds
- Brackets, mounts, and guards

Gate, Fence & Railing Weld Repair
Broken hinges, loose posts, and cracked joints on gates, perimeter fencing, and railings. Most residential jobs are finished in a single visit.
- Driveway and security gates
- Stair, porch, and balcony railings
- Wrought iron and decorative ironwork

Vehicle, Trailer & Fleet Weld Repair
Cracked trailer frames, broken hitches, and failed fleet component joints repaired at your yard, with documentation available for MTO inspection.
- Frame rails and cross-members
- Hitches, couplers, and ramps
- Truck bodies and dump boxes
Metals We Repair
Carbon & Mild Steel
Structural steel, gates, trailers, and equipment, using MIG, flux-core, or stick depending on access and conditions.
Stainless Steel
304 and 316L repaired with grade-matched filler (ER308L, ER316L) and controlled heat input to protect corrosion resistance.
Aluminum
Boat trailers, railings, and truck bodies TIG welded with ER4043 or ER5356 filler, matched to the base alloy.
Signs a Weld Needs Repair
A weld that looks fine can still be failing. These are the most common reasons we get called out, and what each one usually means.
- Visible cracks at the edge of the weldUsually fatigue from repeated loading or vibration. Common on trailers, gates, and equipment.
- Rust bleeding from a jointCorrosion working into the weld or base metal, often where water sits.
- Movement, rattling, or a loose postThe joint has already separated, even if the crack is not visible yet.
- Pinholes or a rough, porous surfacePorosity from the original weld, which weakens the joint from the inside.
- A weld that looks small for the loadUndersized or incomplete fusion welds often fail suddenly under load.
When Replacement Makes More Sense
- Corrosion has thinned the base metal around the joint, not just the weld
- The same joint has failed repeatedly because the design itself is undersized
- The part is a rated lifting component that needs manufacturer or engineer sign-off
- The repair cost approaches the cost of a new part
How Our Welding Repair Process Works
Assess, quote, weld, in one visit. Diagnosis comes before speed, because a repair that skips it fails again.
Initial Consultation
Call or email with the failure, material, location, and access. Photos help us bring the right equipment and consumables.
On-Site Assessment
We inspect the failed joint and identify the cause, not just the location, of the failure.
Written Quote
Labour, consumables, travel, and structural prep in writing before any grinding starts.
Repair Planning
Filler metal, process, and preheat are confirmed so the repair meets the load the joint carries.
Grind Out & Reweld
The crack is removed to clean metal, the joint is prepared, and it is rewelded to CWB procedures under CSA W47.1.
Quality Inspection
Every repaired weld is checked for completeness, profile, and surface defects before we leave.
Handoff & Documentation
The area is cleaned up, and documentation is provided for structural or regulated repairs.
One visit. One team. No towing or shop drop-off.

Welding Repair FAQ
How much does welding repair cost in Toronto?
Most repairs cost $150 to $1,200. Minor residential repairs on gates, fences, or railings typically run $150 to $400. Structural and equipment repairs generally run $350 to $1,200, and larger commercial jobs are quoted per project. Every quote is written and includes travel within the GTA.
Is welding repair cheaper than replacing the part?
Yes, in most cases. A steel gate that costs $2,000 to $4,000 to replace can often be repaired for $200 to $500. If a part genuinely cannot be saved, we tell you before any work starts.
Can a cracked weld be repaired?
Yes. The crack is ground out completely to clean metal, the joint is prepared, and it is rewelded to the correct specification. Running a new bead over a visible crack without removing it is not a real repair, and it usually fails again.
Is a repaired weld as strong as the original?
Yes, when it is done correctly. With full crack removal, proper joint preparation, and the right filler metal, a repaired weld matches the original joint and is often stronger, because some original fabrications skip those steps.
Do you do welding repairs on-site?
Yes. Almost every repair is done at your property, yard, facility, or job site. Our trucks carry the equipment to assess, quote, and weld in one visit, so nothing needs to be towed or removed.
Do you offer emergency or same-day welding repair?
Yes. Booked repairs are usually scheduled within 1 to 3 business days. For structural safety concerns, equipment that is down, or a failed railing, call (647) 641-0550 directly and we will give you an honest availability window right away.
Can you provide documentation for repairs that need inspection?
Yes. For structural repairs, crane and lifting equipment, and commercial trailers subject to MTO inspection, our welders work to approved weld procedures and provide the documentation needed for permits or recertification. Ask for it before the job begins.
Is your welding repair work CWB-certified?
Yes. Every repair is performed by a CWB-certified welder under CSA W47.1, the Canadian standard for companies that weld structural steel. CanaWelding is a division of CanaStruct Inc., an HCRA-licensed structural contractor.
